LAKEWOOD – An upcoming open house, new superintendent contract, band and jazz choir trip to Disneyland and a jazz choir festival performance are keeping the Lakewood School District busy.
The Open House and Community Information Night will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 17 at Lakewood High School. The event is an opportunity for parents, students and the community to learn more about programs offered at Lakewood. A spaghetti dinner will be available for $5 a person.
Kindergarten registration will be held, along with a high school orientation for parents of 8th-graders.
The district’s architects and construction project manager will share the latest plans for construction of the new high school. An overview of the
district’s safety/emergency plan will be shared. Several outside organizations will share information about their groups. Entertainment will be provided by the band and jazz choir “Swingbeat.”

Meanwhile, on March 4, the Lakewood School Board decided to roll over Superintendent Michael Mack’s contract a new three-year duration.
The band and Swingbeat recently returned from a trip to the Magic Kingdom.
“They had a fabulous trip and were simply amazing in their performances and had some of the best Disney Studio experiences ever,” choir director Katy Trapp said of the 97 students.
On March 5, Swingbeat received the highest rating, “Outstanding,” at the DeMiero Jazz Festival.
Students Cassidy Fry and Max Stephens also received awards as solo artists.
Trapp said four students got to work at a vocal scat workshop with the legendary Greta Matassa, and they all were able to meet other greats, such as Frank DeMiero and Dave Barduhn.
