ARLINGTON — Local organizers want to paint the streets purple — literally — during an upcoming Arlington Relay for Life committee event.

Sidewalks between Arlington City Hall and Legion Park will be colored purple during the week proceeding Saturday, May 8, when Mayor Margaret Larson will proclaim the day as “Arlington’s Relay For Life Paint the Town Purple Day.”

Purple is the signature color of The American Cancer Society event.

Relay for Life, which raises money for the organization, gives community members across the country a chance celebrate and remember the lives of people who have battled cancer by taking turns walking or running around a track or path.

In addition to sidewalks being decorated, purple ribbons, bows, flowers and balloons will be on display near the park. Relay for Life teams will also have tables set up for residents who want to get involved.

The event takes place from noon to 2 p.m.

Organizers are also encouraging business owners in downtown Arlington to decorate their storefronts or windows with purple displays. Committee members will recognize the business with the best display during the Saturday event.

Local teams have raised more than $66,000 so far.
