Jazz performance coming to Arlington High School

Jazz lovers will soon be able to hear the sweet sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other favorites during an upcoming performance in the Arlington High School commons.

ARLINGTON — Jazz lovers will soon be able to hear the sweet sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other favorites during an upcoming performance in the Arlington High School commons.

The Arlington High School jazz bands are holding their annual “Swing into Spring” dessert dance at 7 p.m. Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8.

The event — the bands’ yearly fundraiser — gives attendees a chance to enjoy not only the smooth sounds of popular favorites performed by the groups, but also the sweet tastes of dessert items and beverages, which they can enjoy at their tables.

“This is a showcase for the talented jazz musicians at Arlington High School, an evening of great music, and a unique opportunity to welcome the community into the high school,” said Marlene Lewis, band parent.

Cost is $12 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets will be available at the door, but community members are encouraged to reserve tables at the event in advance at Arlington Copy, Mail & More (526 N. West Avenue, Arlington), or by calling 360-435-4900.

Both of the school’s jazz bands — band instructor John Grabowski’s voluntary and advanced groups — will be performing at the dessert dance.

“It’s really a lot of fun to watch the kids have so much fun,” Lewis said. “They are very good. And everyone there has a good time enjoying the music and dancing.”

To set the scene, parents, students and volunteers have been spending turning the high school commons into the “Easy G Jazz Club.” Spearheading those efforts were Arlington High School band booster President Liz Ries and her husband Ken.
