ARLINGTON — A battle of conflicting fighting styles will be on display at the Emerald Queen Casino Oct. 30 as Arlington MMA fighter Matt Kovacs will defend his CageSport Heavyweight Championship title against Nick Braker.

“My style is more like boxing and trading shots, but he’s more jujitsu, so he’s going to try to take it to the ground,” said Kovacs, 29.

Kovacs has plenty of experience with wrestlers, as that is the most common technique fighters use on him.

“I’ve had a lot of KOs, and most guys don’t want to straight up box with me because they find out how hard I hit,” said Kovacs, who has a record of 6-3 since turning pro last November. “So, generally, people to try to take me down to the ground, but I’m going to try to get in there and mix it up.”

Kovacs won the title in June defeating Corey Williams by gaining position from a mount and forcing the fight to be stopped in the first round. Since then, he said there is a difference in how he has been perceived in fights.

“When you have the title, it kind of puts a bulls-eye on your back,” he said. “But I like that. I hold a few other belts and guys come at you more, which is my style.”

Kovacs said he is intrigued about how this coming battle is going to come out, but he promises a show nonetheless.

“He’s a tough guy,” he said. “I’m familiar with him a little bit and he’s a grinder. He’s going to come to fight and I’m going to get in there and bring the fireworks.”

Kovacs’ bout will be the headliner on a card that features 10 fights and begins at 7 p.m.
