OLYMPIA — The Washington State Legislature approved a new two-year capital budget on Saturday, June 29, which included funding to make significant drainage improvements for Prairie Creek in Arlington. State Sen. Kirk Pearson worked to secure $750,000 aimed at reducing flooding in that area, which has had major impacts on local businesses and the Centennial Trail.

“During recent years, the overall flow has increased dramatically, which has led to major issues and long-term concerns for local businesses,” said Pearson, of Monroe, who serves as chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Parks Committee. “Past flooding has damaged property, affected the ability of companies to operate during flood periods, and had a negative impact on some employers that are essential to our local economy.”

The state’s capital budget provides funding for new construction and maintenance of public buildings, as well as other long-term infrastructure projects. The budget also provides funding or low-interest bonding for local government projects.

“This project has had strong support and backing from our local leaders, including the Arlington City Council and Mayor Barbara Tolbert, among others,” Pearson said. “With their help, I’m pleased we were able to get this work started. Once the culverts are replaced with properly sized ones, it will allow businesses to operate normally and make long-term plans to expand in the area.”
