Is summer here? Well it will soon start to heat up and before long the July 4 Holiday will be upon us and fireworks will soon go on sale. So it seems appropriate for us to make sure that all citizens enjoy a safe July 4.
Here are some safety tips and that you should observe in order to prevent injuries and to prevent fires during the Fourth of July.
The Arlington Fire Department encourages everyone to attend a public display of fireworks rather than purchasing or using consumer fireworks.
n Be sure that the fireworks you purchase are not illegal. (Note: most fireworks sold on tribal reservations are illegal. Illegal fireworks are often unpackaged and wrapped in plain brown paper.)
n Do not purchase any fireworks that are not in the original package or are in an opened or damaged package.
n Be sure that you purchase your fireworks at a licensed fireworks booth.
n Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
n Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
n Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
n Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from any buildings, dry grass or vegetation, or other flammable materials.
n Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned or have not ignited at all.
n Keep a bucket of water in case of a malfunction or fire.
n After fireworks have functioned let the package lay on the ground until it is cool and there is no chance that any residue will reignite.
n Only use fireworks outdoors and not under any type cover such as a patio cover
n Place all expended fireworks cases in a bucket of water to thoroughly soak them.
n Never hold fireworks in your hand when lighting.
n Never throw fireworks at or in the direction of any other person.
n Remember that alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
n Always obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
Here are the laws for using fireworks within the city of Arlington.
The sale of fireworks can only be conducted from 9 a.m. on June 28 to 9 p.m. on July 4.
Consumer fireworks can only be discharged on July 4 from 9 a.m. to midnight.
