ARLINGTON — The Arlington Airport received a famous visitor not just once, but twice in less than a week, as the Goodyear Blimp returned to the airfield July 10, after first touching down there July 4.
Goodyear spokeswoman Priscilla Tasker can’t recall the blimp ever mooring at the Arlington Airport before. Indeed, as it made its way north to spend five days in Canada, the blimp was originally slated for a layover at Paine Field in Everett July 4.
“That’s where we’ve gone in the past,” said Tasker, who cited possible concerns about newly installed utilities at Paine Field as a reason for the detour to Arlington. “We bring our own mooring mast, which we drill into the ground, so we were worried about hitting underground utilities.”
By contrast, Tasker touted the open spaces and grassy fields of the Arlington Airport as much easier to fit the blimp in.
“The whole Arlington Airport team was extraordinarily accommodating,” Tasker said.
The blimp’s crew showed its appreciation by doing a few flyovers during Arlington’s Fourth of July parade.
Likewise, when the blimp made its way back from Canada, it returned to Arlington, just as the last of its guests from the Fly-In were heading out.
“We’ve seen a lot of posting on social media about our visit,” Tasker said. “We’re thrilled whenever people are happy to see us, and we’d love to come back again.”
In the meantime, the Goodyear Blimp made its way toward Chehalis July 11, as part of its return trek to its home base in Los Angeles, where it spends most of its time due to the concentration of sporting and entertainment events there.
