ARLINGTON — Three Arlington High School students signed their letters of intent Wednesday to play sports in college, but two took an unconventional route.
Christina Domanowski will be swimming for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Ironically, she didn’t swim for Arlington because it doesn’t have a swim team.
Domanowski swam for a club in Bellevue, commuting everyday. She qualified for junior nationals in Houston her last two years. She will be going again this year.
She chose the Naval Academy because of its principles in teamwork, and its many career options.
“I really liked the community, and it’s a great way to serve the country,” she said.
One of her ambitions is to pursue mechanical engineering but other options exist like surface warfare, she said.
Also, Madison Elsner will row for Sacramento State University. There is no rowing team at Arlington either. She previously swam with Domanowski, but injured herself so she got into rowing as a sophomore. She is now captain of a rowing team in Everett.
She likes the feel when, “All eight people are together in rhythm, the boat just glides across the water.”
What drew her to Sac State was the coach and the area. She has rowed down there before.
She has traveled to 11 countries in her life, so it’s not a surprise she’ll be studying anthropology. “I’ve always been interested in different cultures and sites in general,” she said.
Sidney Trinidad took the more conventional route. After being on the Arlington track team, she will run track for Central Washington University. She felt a “connection with the school” and likes the nursing program there.
Trinidad said Arlington’s rigorous curriculum has prepared her academically, as have her track coaches athletically.
“My coaches have brought in an aspect on being a student athlete,” and balancing the two, she said.
