ARLINGTON – A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being shot this morning by an Arlington police officer.
A knife was recovered at the scene, a Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team news release says. SMART investigates all officer-involved shootings.
The incident occurred about 5 a.m. when police responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of N. Olympic Avenue. A man and woman were arguing in a parking lot, said AaronSnell, an Everett policeofficer serving as spokesman for SMART. The pair were involved in a dating relationship.
Officers separated the two, and observed the woman reportedly had a knife. Specifics have not yet been released, but the woman was shot during contact with police, treated by aid units and airliftedtoHarborview.
SMART detectives will be interviewing the man, as well as several witnesses, Snell said.
SMART is a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use of force incidents.
N. Olympic from Division Street to E. 5th Avenue is closed for the investigation.
Both involved Arlington police officers have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure. One officer is a 12 year veteran of Arlington Police Department and the other has been with theagency for two years.
