SNOHOMISH — For the fourth-straight year, Marysville-Pilchuck High School’s baseball team is going home one win short of qualifying for state.
The Tommies fell to Snohomish 5-4 Wednesday in the District 1 tournament, walking in the winning run.
It was a heart-breaking loss as M-P was up 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning.
The Tomahawks broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Eric Anderson and Colby Phelps that extended their lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the inning, senior Kyle Sandifer led off with a single and came around to score for the home team. Then after loading the bases with no outs in the sixth, Snohomish pushed across a run to cut the margin to 4-3.
Still trailing by that score in the bottom of the seventh, Brandon Jodock hammered a line drive that deflected off M-P reliever Tyler Devries’ glove for a leadoff base hit. Two batters later, Zach Boswell walked. That set the stage for junior Christian Hill, who drove in the tying run by clobbering a one-out double off the upper portion of the high fence in leftfield. With runners on second and third, M-P intentionally walked Jaden McClure to load the bases. Chase Taylor drew a walk to bring in the winning run.
Moments after the loss, Day took solace in the future of his youth-laden program.
“We’ve got three seniors,” Day said. “We’re going to have twelve returners and a lot of good freshmen coming up to fill some spots. … Heck of a year for us. We’ve got pretty much all of our pitchers returning, too. So (it’s) a bright future for Tomahawk baseball.”
