ARLINGTON — The Arlington High School girls soccer team faced off against Edmonds-Woodway, Oct. 15, and despite playing well, fell to the Warriors 2-1.

“The girls were a bit frustrated because they thought we played so well, and lost the game in the very end,” said head coach Nathan Davis. “We had a 1-0 lead in the beginning of the game. Kaylee Bartley scored early to put us ahead. It was a really nice goal. They ended up scoring on a corner kick in about the 60th minute of the game, and then they had the go-ahead goal in the last two minutes of the game.”

Davis said he was pleased how his team played on both offense and defense.

“Overall we played well. On defense, Madi Grogan, who’s my center back, returned after missing a game. She was playing with a broken nose and she did a really nice job in back for us, as did Kerra Williamson,” said Davis. “On offense, we played much better possession, we moved the ball much better and we’re working harder. Bre Morren, who is one of my forwards, did a really nice job distributing the ball, finding her teammates and making plays.”

Davis said his team is young, but that it is led by its seniors, including Grogan, Darby Winterer and Sophia Hitsky, who all play a leadership role.

“We have really good seniors who lead the way,” said Davis. “But, really, we have a pretty young team. Of the 11 girls on the field, we often have 8-9 sophomores playing alongside our seniors.”

The Eagles currently sit in second place in the 3A Wesco North league standings behind Snohomish.

With just a few games remaining in the regular season, Davis said he believes his team will make the playoffs, and still have a chance to capture the Wesco North league title.

“We believed that we would be competing for the league title, and we’re right there. We’ve got to have some things fall our way to get the Wesco North title, but we’re still in the hunt. If Snohomish loses that will help us out a lot. And, we’ve got to beat Snohomish too,” said Davis. “We’ve got to win two out of our last four games to clinch a playoff spot.”

On Oct. 17, the Eagles hosted Lake Stevens and won 6-2. That brings their record, as of Oct. 18, to 7-4 in league, and 9-4 overall.

The Eagles’ remaining regular season games include the Oct. 22 match at Snohomish, the Oct. 24 game at Mount Vernon, and the Oct. 30 home game against Monroe.
