ARLINGTON — Representatives from Arlington were among 2,300 athletes to attend the Special Olympics Washington’s Summer Games 2010 earlier this month.

Twelve area residents participated in the event, which took place June 4-6 in Ft. Lewis.

The athletes took home a combined 22 medals — six gold, eight silver and eight bronze.

“With eight athletes in every heat, our team was prepared to do their best and be happy with ribbons,” said head coach Sandy Catiis. “They all ended up walking away with at least one medal. That is hard to do at state.”

The athletes included Joshua Catiis (two bronze, one silver), Collin Smith (one gold, one bronze, one fourth-place finish), Will Peseau (one silver), Charles Steele (one gold, one silver, one fourth-place finish), Brandon Edmonds (one silver, one sixth-place and one seventh-place finish), Cori Wreggelsworth (one gold, one silver and one sixth-place finish), Adam Lefebvre (one silver, one bronze), Ben Lefebvre (two gold and one sixth-place finish), Jamie McClure (one silver, two bronze), Mike Henry (one bronze), Hayden Smith (one gold, one silver, one fourth-place finish) and Jim Cox (one bronze, one fifth-place and one sixth-place finish).

The team was coached by Sandy Catiis, Wade Smith and Derey Edmonds.

Volunteers included Bruce Berquist, Jeff Edmonds, Scott Peseau, Jane Smith, Therese Hartman and Rhonda Wreggelsworth.

“Without our volunteers, this could not have happened,” Catiis said.

All of the team’s athletes received brand new shoes from Brooks, which donates 30,000 shoes to the Special Olympics.

Catiis said that the team was also treated to a number of activities and meals during its trip to Ft. Lewis.

Shirts worn by the athletes were made by the Arlington High School Honor Society.
