BELLINGHAM — Six incoming freshmen from Arlington have received President’s Scholarships from Western Washington University. These scholarships are awarded to the top 8 percent to 10 percent of incoming freshmen and transfer students. They are based on superior academic achievement.
n Asa Abbott, son of Gordon and Penny Abbott of Arlington, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Abbott earned a 3.78 GPA at Arlington High School and is interested in majoring in music. He is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in the On Hold Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble in high school. He hopes to have a career in the music industry after graduating from Western.
n Emily Barry, daughter of Thomas and Shannon Barry of Silvana, received a $1,500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Barry earned a 4.0 GPA at Arlington High School and is interested in majoring in Environmental Studies or Environmental Sciences.
n Gavin Gladsjo, son of Ernie and Carol Gladsjo of Arlington, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Gladsjo earned a 3.68 GPA at Darrington High School and is interested in majoring in anthropology. He is a National Honor Society member and participated in the ecology and science clubs at Darrington. He hopes to become an anthropologist after graduating from Western.
n Hans Henderson, son of Phillip and Melinda Henderson of Arlington, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. He earned a 3.86 GPA at Arlington High School and is interested in majoring in secondary education. He is a National Honor Society member and participated in football, wrestling and baseball during high school. He hopes to become a high school mathematics teacher after graduating from Western.
n Ryanne Mueller, daughter of Rod and Patsy Eddy of Arlington, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Mueller earned a 3.94 GPA at Arlington High School and is interested in majoring in biology. She is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in volleyball, track and ASB (Associated Student Body) during high school. She hopes to become a marine biologist after graduating from Western.
n Jessica Safford, daughter of Dave and Carol Safford of Arlington, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Safford earned a 3.8 GPA at Arlington High School and is interested in majoring in music. She hopes to become a performer or music teacher after graduating from Western.
n Shelby Sherrill, daughter of Richard and Debra Sherrill of Arlington, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Sherrill, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.99 GPA at Arlington High School and is interested in majoring in accounting. She is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in Future Business Leaders of America and Spanish Club during high school. She was also named a WAVE (Washington Award for Vocational Excellence) Scholar and worked as a math tutor and girls basketball coach during high school. She hopes to become an international accountant after graduating from Western.
