Although girls wrestling is a phenomenon unto itself in Skagit County — wrestling stalwarts Burlington-Edison alone fielded 42 girls — the Lakewood contingent of 12 girls represented Snohomish County ably at the Sedro-Woolley girls invite.

Last year’s state wrestlers Keely Caldwell and Christina Ordonez handily won their brackets. At 130 pounds, Caldwell went 3-0 through her class, felling Ashley Bowe of Elma in the first round and eventual third-place finisher Sarah Moquin of Sedro-Woolley in the second round. In the championship match, Haylee Rabenstein was pinned by Caldwell in 1:19.

Ordonez rose to the top of her six-woman bracket in similar fashion. A first-round bye earned a bout with another third-place finisher, Haylie Osborn of Yelm. Ordonez pinned Osborn in just over a minute and took even less time to topple Megan Lomsdalen of Burlington-Edison. Twenty-seven seconds were all required.

A third bracket championship went to Lakewood’s Autumn Novak, who beat Tawnya Wessar. The girls went 1-2 in a bracket of five girls.

Although she was pinned in her last match, Lakewood’s Chelsea Favro took fourth place out of eight girls at 140 pounds, pinning her first opponent and getting a key 7-6 decision to make the consolation match.

A first-round win meant that Lakewood senior Amanda Gregory also placed in her bracket. With an 8-1 decision in the first match, Gregory went on to place sixth at 119 pounds.
