ARLINGTON — Eagle girls basketball brought a five-game winning streak home on Jan. 3 as they faced Wesco South opponent Kamiak.

The Eagles had no difficulty with their conference opener as they out-scrapped the Knights for a 70-32 win.

Arlington came out with a full-court press in which junior guard Krista Showalter and senior guard Megan Abdo double-teamed the ball dribbler. Kamiak kept their motors running to break the press, but not before Arlington scored easy layups in transition.

“This is a good league,” said Arlington head coach Joe Marsh of the Eagle attack. “If you give them confidence, they’ll come back, and we’ve got all league games from here on out.”

Senior guard Kaiti Ferro and junior forward Lindsay Brown tortured Kamiak in the post. Showalter took advantage of the sagging defense and attacked the basket off the dribble. Showalter stole the ball and senior guard Lauren Grogan hit a three-pointer from the left shoulder.

Senior center Danyell Winterrowd scored off of a Showalter zip pass through the key. Brown chased a rebound to the wing and found Winterrowd open beneath the basket for a lay-in. Abdo surged down the lane, drawing fouls as Kamiak stepped up to challenge her.

Arlington led 22-11 at the end of the first quarter after keeping Kamiak out of the paint and forcing quick jumpers. They out-hustled Kamiak to loose balls and rebounds. Showalter earned free throws by going in strong to the basket. Brown posted up in the paint and found Abdo cutting down the middle.

Kamiak took up a full-court press to slow the Eagle pace, but Grogan hit a three from the right shoulder, stole the ensuing inbound pass and passed to Brown in the high post who found Abdo for a layup.

Complete rebounding domination put the Eagles up 33-18 at halftime.

Arlington kept their press to begin the second half. They overwhelmed Kamiak the first time, but Kamiak created a fast break on the next trip down the court. Senior guard Jensen Evans drew a foul with a strong drive and Ferro became an enforcer on defense, smacking down Kamiak layups and stuffing lay-ins. She grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a put-back to force a Kamiak timeout, up 42-18, with 5:09 left in the third quarter.

The Eagles went to their grind-it-out post game with Ferro to put the squeeze on the Kamiak defense that had not stopped her all night. Grogan put the Knights in a catch-22 by nailing two three-pointers from the right shoulder in a row. She connected on a put-back and junior guard Winter Brown nailed a buzzer-beating three to end the third quarter, in which they outscored Kamiak 29-5, with a 62-23 lead.

The fourth quarter was exactly like the first three. Grogan and Brown hit a three-pointer each before Arlington slowed down their attack with lots of passing to run the last seconds off the clock and coast to a 70-32 win.

“I’m really proud,” Marsh said. “We spread the floor and shared the ball so you can’t stop any one person. We like to shoot threes and Lauren ended up with five.”
