ARLINGTON — Local cancer patients and families in need both benefited from the charity of organizers of the Downtown Arlington Business Association’s Show ‘n Shine car show July 21.

The oncology department at Cascade Valley Hospital received a DVD player, three CD players with headphones, and dozens of CDs and DVDs, for which Show ‘n Shine organizers spent approximately $500. Another estimated $500 was spent on food for the Arlington Food Bank, which was also drawn from the proceeds of this year’s Show ‘n Shine.

Event co-chair Marilyn Bullock explained that the CDs, DVDs and players were given to the oncology department, for the time chemo patients spend receiving treatment.

“It’s nice that patients in town don’t have to travel to receive that treatment,” Bullock said. “They have enough stress.”

The only specific request that Show ‘n Shine organizers received from the Food Bank was for “women’s products.” Otherwise, the organizers made their own choices, and opted for food items that could be useful for any family.

“We got a lot of canned goods and ramen,” Bullock said. “We wanted people to be able to make full meals out of what we provided, from peanut butter and tuna fish to fruits and vegetables. It’s fun shopping with somebody else’s money,” she laughed.

Jokes aside, Bullock and her fellow Show ‘n Shine organizers kept in mind that they weren’t shopping for themselves.

“We always want to give back to the community for supporting our downtown businesses,” Bullock said.
