LAKEWOOD — “It was kind of a rough night,” said Lakewood senior Jason Mueller.
At 152 pounds, Mueller defeated Sultan freshman David Huckabone.
The event, along with a win at 160 pounds, were bright spots in an otherwise difficult night for Lakewood wrestlers.
In the night’s second-to-last event, Huckabone tried swinging Mueller down to the mat in a move that had worked for the Turk wrestlers all night. But Mueller seemed to be wise to the move, flipping Huckabone over his shoulder instead, for a takedown. Huckabone would only score a point on an escape before Mueller pinned the Sultan wrestler with 35 seconds left in the first round, giving Lakewood its first earned points all night.
Sultan defeated the Cougars 63-24 in the Jan. 22 meet.
Mueller’s co-captain, senior Billy McKeever, won the night’s final match. Although it was too late to pull off a team win, McKeever took control of his match with Sultan sophomore Tyler Huddell early on. He took the first lead, 2-0, on a takedown and a 5-0 lead by the end of the first round on near fall. Seventeen seconds into the second round, McKeever pinned Huddell.
“Billy and Jason wrestled well,” said Lakewood coach Tom O’Hara. “At 160, (Sultan) had a state placer, but he didn’t wrestle tonight.”
With the exception of heavyweight Alex Wilson, all of Lakewood’s losses were pins. Wilson took the match’s first lead, one point on an escape in the second round. A Sultan takedown exchanged the lead, but Wilson tied it again going into the third round. A Sultan escape, followed by takedown, gave Adam Schilling a 5-2 win.
Freshman Steven Speer and senior Kolton Baker drew the praise of their teammate in losing matches.
“We had a lot of things we worked on yesterday that we didn’t do tonight,” Mueller added.
