Soriano gets $3,000 from Wal-Mart

A high school student from Arlington is the recipient of a $3,000 college scholarship from the Wal-Mart Foundation. The Wal-Mart Foundation has just announced it will award more than $8 million in academic scholarships to help ease financial concerns for college-bound students.

Alexa Soriano of Arlington High School is one of 2,695 winners of the of the 2009 Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Each student will receive $3,000 to use toward tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The recipients of the 2009 Sam Walton Community Scholarship are students across the country, including 26 from the state of Washington, who have excellent academic scores, have shown financial need and are involved in their communities.

Lopes gets Dean’s scholarship at EWU

Stephanie Lopes of Arlington has been awarded a Dean’s Scholarship for $1,500 for the 2009-10 academic year at Eastern Washington University. The award is given to new incoming freshman who have demonstrated outstanding academic merit and achievements in high school.

Stephanie will graduate from Arlington High School this spring, where she played volleyball and basketball. She was also involved with the sports medicine program. She will attend EWU in the fall.

Stephanie is the daughter of Alfred and Kim Lopes of Arlington.

Meyrick earns EWU Presidential scholarship

Matt Meyrick of Arlington, Washington has been awarded a Presidential scholarship for $2,000 for the 2009-10 academic year at Eastern Washington University. The award is given to students with 3.8-plus GPA or an SAT score of 1,250-plus or ACT score of 28-plus.

Matt will graduate from Jenkins High School this spring, where he was involved with drama and the school newspaper. He was also a member of jazz band and wind ensemble.

He will attend EWU in the fall where he hopes to study theatre and journalism.

Matt is the son of Tammy Meyrick of Arlington.

Herman named ‘Big Ten Senior’ at WSU

Daniel Herman was recognized as a “Big Ten Senior” by Washington State University for his excellence in campus involvement. The award is traditionally given to five graduating men and five graduating women who represent a specific aspect of the college experience. Awards are given in academics, athletics, campus involvement, community service and visual/performing arts.

Herman graduated from Arlington High School in 2005 and is majoring in history at WSU. During the 2005 year, Herman was recognized as a Regents Scholar. He has served as a section editor and editor-in-chief of The Daily Evergreen, WSU’s student-run newspaper. Herman has also worked for the chemistry department and as the assistant to the head of Information Technology. As a member of Farmhouse Fraternity, Herman served as new member educator and recruitment chair. Herman is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society, a collegiate honor society. He is the son of JoAnne and Paul Herman of Arlington.
