Arlington track takes second place

Year-end rivals for two years at the 3A level, Everett still managed to best Arlington track and field in a conference meet as the Eagles return to 4A competition.

ARLINGTON — Year-end rivals for two years at the 3A level, Everett still managed to best Arlington track and field in a conference meet as the Eagles return to 4A competition.

Between the boys and girls teams, Arlington athletes won 12 events at the March 26 meet but couldn’t quite come up with the points for the win.

The girls were led by junior Ginny Wilson, who repeated her Randall Relay wins in the long jump (16-3 1/2) and high jump (4-10) and anchored the winning 4×100 relay with Stefanie Schmuck, Erin Taylor and Kandace Evans.

Schmuck also won the girls 100 hurdles with a time of 17.49, a close foot race in which teammate Melissa Webb took fourth with a time just a fraction of a second slower.

The Eagle girls’ two other wins came in the throwing events, as junior Marissa Elgarico led the shot put field with a mark of 34-11 and sophomore Stephanie Van Slageren won the javelin, the only competitor to break 100 feet with a mark of 108-0.

The boys were led by senior Sean Gregory. The distance runner won the mile and 3,200, with his 4:31.92 time in the 1,600 on par with the one that qualified him for state last year. In the 3,200, he had a personal best, running a time of 10:30.52. Gregory was also part of the winning 4×400 relay, which included Sherman Pruitt, James Clark and Jake Parduhn.

Freshman Bo Brummel was a winner in the shot put, his 41-9 throw beating teammate and runner-up Jerod Baker, while freshman Max Bryson repeated his Randall Relays win in the high jump with a mark of 6-6. Bryson began jumping at 5-10, two inches higher than than the three rival jumpers who tied for second place. Sophomore Griffin Ginnis gave the Eagles a sixth victory on the boys side, winning the long jump with a mark of 20-2 3/4.

Sophomore James Clark was a two-time runner-up for the Eagles, placing second in the 800 and the 1,600, while freshman Alexis Sarver took second place on jumps in the girls high jump, matching Wilson’s best mark of 4-10. Sophomore Melissa Webb was second to Wilson in the long jump and took third in the triple jump to lead the field of Arlington girls in the latter event.
