LAKE STEVENS — In this particular game, anything seemed possible.

And the unlikely happened, as the Marysville juniors came back from trailing 12-2 to Stilly Valley and tied the score in the bottom of the sixth and forced extra innings.

“That’s just how it’s been all year for us,” said Marysville coach Scott Wood, whose team overcame a 6-1 deficit earlier in the All-Star tournament.

But Stilly Valley came away with the victory, scoring five in the top of the eighth to conclude a near four-hour game and win 17-12.

The winner earned a trip to the championship game to be played July 7 at 6 p.m. and the loser has to win one more game to earn spot in the title game.

“It got interesting there, and then the sun came out and it got even more interesting for us,” said Stilly Valley coach Bobby Collins. “But we made it out and we’re excited to play for a spot in the state tournament.”

Stilly Valley opened the game scoring four runs in the first without having a hit. Instead, the Arlington juniors drew six walks in the inning — they drew 16 total.

“We got a little frustrated in the first couple innings and that went all the way down,” said Wood.

Stilly Valley scored another four runs in the fifth inning, this time stringing together four hits. They batted around four times in the game.

With the score 12-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Marysville got its revenge, however, putting seven consecutive batters on the bases behind four hits, three walks and an error. Wood’s boys scored seven runs before Stilly Valley could get the first out in the inning as the sun came out and they had problems finding the ball in the air.

“We’re not an Arizona team where we’re used to this kind of thing,” Collins said of the sun. “We practice it, but this was kind of the perfect storm.”

Holding Stilly Valley scoreless in the seventh, Marysville tied the game up in the bottom half with a couple of runs when Ben Noetheop doubled and then scored on Chad Mulleins’ single, who then scored on T.J. Rice’s single moments later.

The eighth inning belonged to Stilly Valley, however, which started with Bradley Mosalsky’s single. He would later come around to score the winning run on Dallas Guererro’s walk, but the back-breaker came from Tristan Jegar, who had a bases-clearing triple.

Stilly Valley received contributions from a number of players, but standing out was the all-around game of Ryan Walker, who went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs, three stolen bases, two walks and three runs scored.

The Stilly Valley juniors are made up of Walker, Josh Schemp, Guerrero, Jager, Kyle Osborn, Jacob Crain, Peter Chung, Brandon Tallman, Mosalsky, Brandon Smith, Garret Wiseman, Andrew Stich and Noah Sorenson.
