ARLINGTON — The City Council was scheduled to recognize the American Legion and American Legion Post 76 with a proclamation during its most recent meeting.

The city’s proclamation calls upon all citizens to express their appreciation for the work accomplished by veterans locally and across Washington, said Jay Lorenz, vice commander for Post 76.

“The strength of the American Legion lies at the local Post level,” Lorenz said. “Here in Arlington, we are dedicated to doing our part to support our active duty soldiers, airmen, marines, veterans and their families, and most importantly give back to this wonderful community.”

Post Commander Ken Trusky, Auxiliary President Vicky Bailey, Sons of the American Legion Commander Ken Agnew and Lorenz were scheduled to be on hand Sept. 21 to accept the honor.

American Legion was founded in March 1919, and chartered by the U.S. Congress on Sept. 16, 1919 — 90 years ago this month. Today, nearly three million members representing all branches of the military belong to the organization.

The local post has nearly 700 active duty and veteran members, including their families.

Post 76 spearheads a number of local programs. It has raised more than $16,000 during its annual Toys for Kids holiday toy drive, provided college scholarships for high school students and provides building space for a local boxing club and local Alcoholics Anonymous group, in addition to coordinating other community projects.
