ARLINGTON — The first ever Gleneagle Golf Course Kids Day was a sunny success on Saturday, May 19, despite traffic congestion from the Gleneagle neighborhood’s annual garage sale.

Children were able to sell items at their own garage sale tables, practice golf, check out a fire engine and look at adoptable cats from Purrfect Pals.

“We’ve had about 100 kids come through,” said Jessica Edwards, event organizer. “It’s the first year, so now we have some ideas for next year.”

Representatives from the program First Tee gave some of the kids a taste of golf. First Tee is set to begin an eight-week program at Gleneagle Golf Course, starting in June.

“We are expecting to have a significant program over the summer,” said Steve Neil, from First Tee.  “We teach life skills, such as goal setting, self management and interpersonal skills, through the game of golf.”

Firefighters from the Arlington Fire Department gave kids a tour of their fire engine, letting them sound the alarm, sit in the cabin and even spray the hose. Arlington Police Department’s K-9 unit was also on-site for the kids to check out.

Purrfect Pals brought four cats from their Lakewood location, including two small kittens, in the hopes of teaching kids about taking care of pets, and even to adopt them out to loving families.

“We do cat adoptions and information,” said Kat Dockstader, manager and volunteer offsite manager. “We have two 8-week-old kittens, a 5-month-old kitten and a 2-year-old cat.”

The 5 month-old kitten, Peanut, caught the attention of four-year old Savannah Cifu, who told her mother that she wants to keep her. “She’d be happy to get rid of the dog so she can have a cat, but her brother wouldn’t be very happy,” joked her mom, Brianne Cifu.

The cats that did not get adopted during the Kids Day event would go to various local pet stores for off-site adoption drives.

“Our shelter has been in Arlington since 1994,” said Susan Bark, foster coordinator. “We rescue from shelters and people who can’t keep them.”
