ARLINGTON — Entering their first Northwest Conference 1B game of the season, both Tulalip Heritage and Highland Christian were looking for consistency.

On Dec. 14, the Hawks played at a higher level longer than the Knights in a 76-32 win at the Arlington Boys & Girls Club.

“The scoreboard may not show it, but the kids felt good about how they competed tonight,” said Knights coach Jim Underwood. “We’re a young team and we’re improving.”

Highland might have put its best foot forward in the second half, after the game’s result was no longer in doubt. The Knights went on a 10-0 run and played with an intensity that matched Tulalip despite trailing 62-30.

“The kids didn’t give up and that’s what we’re going for,” Underwood said.

Leading the Knights was Calvin Wold, who did a little bit of everything. While running the point most of the game for Highland, Wold, a senior, scored a game-high 21 points — including a pair of 3-pointers — and grabbed 13 rebounds.

“He has tremendous ability,” said Underwood of Wold. “He’s transitioning from being a post player last year, but it’s nice to have a guard at 6-1.”

Turnovers were the main culprit for the Knights, which committed 29.

Highland trailed 18-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Tulalip opened the second with an 18-0 run to earn a 36-10 lead. Many of Highland’s turnovers resulted in fastbreak opportunities for the Hawks, who shot 50 percent.

The loss knocks the Knights to 2-2 so far this season and 0-1 in conference play.

Most of Highland’s turnovers happened before the fourth quarter, when the Knights were stingier with the ball, an ending to the game that Underwood is proud of.

Highland’s first-year coach also commented on Jordan Star’s ball movement.

“He’s a quarterback there for us,” said Underwood. “What he brings to the table is just settling the kids down and getting into our offense.
