M-P girls golf gears up for districts

The Tomahawk girls golf team hosted league rivals at Cedarcrest Golf Course April 24 and enjoyed a strong team showing.

While medalist and runner-up honors went to the winning Oak Harbor squad, M-P narrowly took second with 229 Stableford points over 18 holes of golf.

The Tomahawk result was due to a 3-4-5 finish by M-P golfers, led by junior golfer Sara Rott, who finished with 50 Stableford points and 92 strokes on the par 70 course. Rott was followed closely by senior Tierany Winston, who took fourth at the meet with 49 Stableford points and 93 strokes. Third for the team and fifth overall was freshman golfer Abby Beauchamp, with 48 points and 94 strokes. All three finishes were personal bests for the golfers.

Lake Stevens finished well behind M-P with 191 team points, followed by Arlington with 69 and Stanwood with 34.

Sophomore Stacia Ashley proved the team leader when the girls played nine holes at Camaloch Golf Course on Camano Island. With 23 Stableford points, Ashley edged teammates Rott and Winston who finished with 19 points each. Beauchamp and junior Lynee Brown weren’t far behind with 17 and 16 points respectively.

With 90 strokes on 18 holes, Ashley led the team again when they traveled to Ellensburg for the Suncadia Tournament.

“That was her best round in a match — a major accomplishment on a course that is usually only played with people in carts,” said coach Jaci Legore Hodgins. The team placed ninth out of 23 teams.

M-P tennis has enjoyed recent success on its home court

Now that the rain is gone and early season matches are finally being played, the Tomahawks have hosted four opponents at home in 11 days, and split the results with two big wins and two narrow losses.

At number two singles, Jodie Anderson has been a victor in all four of her home matches. She started off defeating Lake Stevens’ Jordan Young 6-0, 6-3 in the Tomahawks’ 4-3 loss to Lake Stevens. She continued with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Everett’s Sarah Barber, a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 defeat of Cascade’s Whitney Taylor and 6-0, 6-3 against Oak Harbor’s Kellie Newton.

The Tomahawks’ number one singles player Ashley Bartlett and number three singles’ LiAnne Falenski have won three out of the four matches.

The Tommies lost April 21 to Lake Stevens and won 6-1 a day later when they hosted Everett. M-P lost 4-3 to Cascade on April 28 and won 6-1 over Oak Harbor May 2.

At number two doubles, Amy Famelos has played one half of a doubles duo that also won three out of four. She teamed up with Kelsey Brubaker to defeat Oak Harbor and Cascade challengers, while Kaitlyn Enberg was her teammate in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Everett’s number two doubles.
