Experimental aircraft pilot escapes unharmed after airport crash

A pilot walked away uninjured after his experimental aircraft crashed Wednesday, Sept. 30.

ARLINGTON — A 57-year-old Spanaway resident walked away uninjured after their experimental aircraft crashed Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The small aircraft, identified as a Long-EZ, crashed adjacent to an Arlington Municipal Airport runway shortly after 5:30 p.m., said city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield.

The Arlington Fire Department extinguished the fire.

An airport staff member who was on site when the crash occurred said the pilot was preparing for take-off when his canopy disengaged from the aircraft, Banfield said.

The small aircraft then went off the runway and caught fire, she said.

The pilot has not yet been identified.
