TULALIP — Roughly 3,000 people visited the Tulalip Resort Casino parking lot Aug. 14 and 15 for the I-5 Extravaganza.
Now in its seventh year, the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament, put on by the Snohomish County Boys & Girls Club, saw 130 teams fight for titles organized by age.
“Overall I think everybody had fun,” said Terry Freeman, tournament organizer and Associate Director of Development for the Snohomish County Boys & Girls Club. “There are a lot of good players and just good basketball.”
Teams fought through 90 degree heat on both days, playing as many as eight games — sometimes back-to-back — to earn the right to play for the championship.
“I don’t think the heat mattered to the players much, except maybe made them cranky,” said Freeman. “But they all want to win anyway. Everybody is stay
ing hydrated and seemed ready for the weather.”
While players might not have been deterred by the heat, Freeman did point out that some vendors just couldn’t operate on the Tulalip asphalt. Marysville’s own barbecue restaurant, Sticky Fingers, had to pack up after Day 1.
“It was so hot out here that people just didn’t want to eat the food,” Freeman said. “So they decided to go.”
Meanwhile cool treats such as snow cones were the most popular of the day.
But the rest of the tournament went off without a hitch, as approximately 70 volunteers did everything from refereeing to taking score. The volunteers were headed by Bud Brummell and Daren Carlson.
The tournament usually brings in about $25,000, which is distributed to the Boys & Girls Clubs in Snohomish County.
“This is a great fundraiser because you’ll have your golf tournaments and your auctions, but there aren’t any fundraisers that involves kids, and that is what it’s all about,” Freeman said.
Freeman also credited the Tulalip Resort Casino for lending the space.
“Without them, this just couldn’t be possible,” he said.
Final Results
The following are the results from the seventh annual I-5 Extravaganza 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Aug. 14 and 15 at the Tulalip Resort Casino. More than 140 teams participated in various age groups while approximately 3,000 spectators looked on throughout the tournament. Teams fought each other and 90 degree heat for as many as seven 20 minute games to win their classification’s championship.
