It takes a lot of pride to pull off a season like the Lady Cougars did this year.
Ward, Shortt finish in seventh place at 4A level, Arlington program takes step forward
LAKEWOOD — It may have taken longer, but that made the Lady Cougars’ first win all the sweeter Feb. 19 against South Whidbey.
Lakewood entered the game 0-19 with one final chance to get a first victory, and they did with a 50-40 win in a Cascade Conference game.
With the score tied at 11-11 after the first quarter, Lakewood did something it had yet to do this season, hold an opponent to just single digits in a quarter, as the Cougars went on a 15-3 run that was sparked by junior Jordan Wessell’s three-point play.
Lakewood senior Keely Caldwell had a rough road to third place.
Ranked nationally in the top 10, the Lakewood 125-pounder suffered an opening-round defeat before pinning her way to the podium.
“It feels like first,” said Caldwell. “This is the best I’ve ever done.”
Caldwell trailed Kennewick’s Hanna Moon 7-4 in the second round before pulling out a pin.
Young Arlington squad finishes two wins from state
The lady Eagles survived to play at least one more.
It seemed as if every Arlington player had at least one eye on Standwood’s Zack Johnson.
Unfortunately for the undersized Eagles, that meant too many eyes focused on the post and away from the three-point line in a 67-46 District 1 tournament loss to Stanwood Feb. 17.
In a game where 136 points were scored, two defensive plays made the difference.
The Eagles left no doubt as to who belonged in the District 1 tournament.
If Dustin Ward meets Alex Coffman again this season, it will likely decide who gets what medal.
Arlington coaches Joe Marsh and Erik Heinz sometimes joke about who is going to win the most games.
SNOHOMISH — Oddly, the lady Eagles hoops team found itself on the ropes in the fourth quarter Feb. 10.
Having held a 40-20 lead not more than 10 minutes earlier, there were looks of bewilderment on the faces many Arlington players as Snohomish brought the score to within two with nearly four minutes remaining.
“We just couldn’t generate the same kind of emotion,” said Arlington coach Nathan Davis after a 53-48 Wesco North victory. “We got that early lead and were like, ‘Cool’ and sat back.”
The Cougar boys showed they can pour on the points in spurts, but the droughts did them in versus Archbishop Murphy.
