ARLINGTON — Patrick and Kathleen Kennedy have seen more antique furniture than most people will ever lay eyes on.
“There’s a lot of satisfaction in doing this,” Patrick Kennedy said about the couple’s home business, Kennedy’s Refinishing.
The Snohomish County-based business is celebrating 30 years — including the past 13 in Arlington — in 2010.
Kennedy founded the company in 1980, and since then he’s been providing professional repair and refinishing of home, office and church furnishings.
It’s a pretty small staff — Patrick Kennedy handles the restoration and refinishing of clients’ pieces, while Kathleen Kennedy schedules appointments, talks with potential clients on the phone and gives estimates.
The couple’s business is operated out of their home — a small workshop is located near their house located on Arlington Heights Road.
A self-taught refinisher, Patrick Kennedy said that he’s seen a number of unique pieces over the years. He said the largest pieces he’s ever worked on was an 18-foot-tall church alter, which took him three years to complete.
“Each day is a little bit different,” Kennedy said. “Sometimes my shop is full of pieces from one kitchen. Other times I just need to refinish something small. My goal all depends on the customer.”
During the past 30 years, the Kennedy’s have not just repaired furniture — they’ve had 10 children since being married 28 years ago.
“That’s the reason I like to work,” said Kennedy, laughing.
