Area residents can expect an afternoon of Halloween festivities in downtown Arlington.

Activities kick off on Saturday, Oct. 31, as Arlington Hardware hosts its annual pumpkin carving contest. Entries will be accepted starting Thursday, Oct. 29 through Saturday before 10 a.m.

Judging will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the grand prize winner will receive a new bicycle.

If preparing pumpkin pie is more one’s style, a pumpkin pie contest will be held at Legion Park on Olympic Avenue. Pies will be judged by Mayor Margaret Larson, Arlington School District Superintendent Kristine McDuffy and award-winning baker Teri Bravomejia. Pies must be dropped off between 11 a.m. and noon.

From noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, participating downtown businesses will offer candy as children are invited to trick or treat on Olympic Avenue.

“Trunk or treating,” sponsored by Lifeway Church, will be also be offered in the parking lot by Arlington City Hall at that time.

A costume contest coordinated by the Arlington Arts Council will take place at 1 p.m. at the Legion Park Gazebo. Winners will receive gift certificates from the Local Scoop Cafe.

At 1:30 p.m., the Great Pumpkin Roll will again return to the First Street hill. Contestants will roll pumpkins down the hill at 2 p.m., and prizes will be awarded.

Finally, from 2:30-4 p.m., area children can grab some more candy while trick or treating at Olympic Place Retirement Facility at 20909 Olympic Place. Free snacks and pizza will be available for families.
