ARLINGTON — Applications are due Aug. 22 for those interested in joining the newly established Youth Councils for Arlington and Darrington.
The purpose of the youth councils is to advise their respective mayors and city councils on issues that relate to and affect the youth of the two communities, providing a forum for young people’s perspectives and fostering connections between area teens and municipal government.
The two towns are recruiting youths who will be in grades 8-12 during the 2016-17 school year.
Sarah Lopez, who’s served as recreation and communications manager for Arlington, explained that each council will consist of seven people who reside within the Arlington or Darrington school districts.
The adult support staff will include Lopez, Weston High School Principal Will Nelson and Jana Ferris, a Washington State University Extension Youth and Family associate professor and county director.
“We’re looking for kids who would benefit most from this program, which includes kids who aren’t already involved in lots of activities,” Lopez said.
Nelson added: “This is the perfect opportunity and venue for the youth in our community to learn about and get involved in our local government. The Arlington Youth Council gives a voice to our youth.”
Lopez tentatively expects council members to be selected by Sept. 15.
Lopez noted that the youth council members will also receive a lesson in budget management, since they’ll have $10,000 to work with in their coffers.
