Arlington girls advance to state

MILL CREEK – Gracie Castaneda had ice in her veins. Arlington's 5-foot-8 junior guard made five free throws in the last 23.8 seconds of overtime to lead the Lady Eagles to a 57-52 win over Edmonds Woodway in the 3A Northwest District 1 Girls Basketball Tournament Feb. 21.

Arlington’s 5-foot-8 junior guard made five free throws in the last 23.8 seconds of overtime to lead the Lady Eagles to a 57-52 win over Edmonds Woodway in the 3A Northwest District 1 Girls Basketball Tournament Feb. 21.

With the win, the Eagles advance to state.

Castaneda scored nine of her 10 points in the overtime period.

The Eagles won the game at the free throw line, making 14 of 18, compared with 6 of 13 for the Warriors.

Jayla Russ, a 6-foot junior forward, led the winners with 17 points before fouling out with 1:17 to go in overtime and her team ahead 50-47. Jessica Ludwig, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, added 13 points.

Arlington took a big lead at halftime 25-15 after holding Edmonds to four points in the second quarter, but the Warriors battled back to within three at the end of three then actually moved ahead 42-40 with 1:12 left in regulation.

Ludwig made a three-pointer with about 12 seconds left for Arlington to send it into overtime.
