ARLINGTON — Arlington High School student Haley Bacon will be off her feet for at least the next week, and her mother wants to find the hit-and-run driver who’s responsible.
“I’d at least like some closure and an apology,” said Tina Kehoe, Haley’s mother, who received a phone call from her daughter shortly after she was hit on the morning of Oct. 26. “I can’t believe someone would just leave a teenager like that in the middle of a highway.”
Haley, 17, was struck by what she identified as a beige-gold four-door at approximately 6:35 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 9 and Eaglefield Drive, as she was coming out of the Gleneagle neighborhood.
“She has to get up early to go her Air Force Junior ROTC,” Kehoe said. “The car turned right from Eaglefield Drive onto Highway 9 and hit her as she was walking in the crosswalk. Haley had the little guy in the crosswalk signal telling her to go ahead.”
Although Haley has no broken bones, the damage to her ankle is enough that her doctor has told her to stay off her leg and keep it elevated, taking her out of school for the remainder of the week, and possibly the following week as well.
“The doctors did X-rays and the police officers took pictures of her injuries,” Kehoe said. “Haley hit the corner of the car and went onto its hood on her left side, then rolled off and landed on the road on her right side. She’s got scrapes and scratches and contusions. Her elbow is purple and yellow, practically Halloween colors.”
Haley’s JROTC uniform, which she was wearing at the time, took its share of wear and tear from the hit-and-run as well. She described the driver of the vehicle as a woman in her late 40s or early 50s with short curly hair.
“I’m just beside myself that someone would leave a child in the road like that,” Kehoe said.
Kehoe is asking those with any information related to the hit-and-run to contact her by phone at 509-391-9768, or via email at dtkehoe60@hotmail.com. The Arlington Police Department would ask that anyone with information contact them at 360-403-3400.
