ARLINGTON — Area readers can swing by the Arlington Library to stock up on books and support the library’s programs at the same time.

The Friends of the Arlington Library are conducting a book and media sale to raise funds for the library and its programs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 10.

The Friends are a volunteer group whose members collect donations of used books, media and magazines from private citizens and the Sno-Isle Library system alike, the latter when it purges books no longer being circulated. According to Catherine Paxton, a spokesperson for the Friends, they sort and price these donations to conduct sales of children and teens’ books, fiction and non-fiction books, and an assortment of free books and magazines and “better books.”

“The average lobby price is 50 cents to $2 per book, but we have some as high as $9, as well as the freebies, so our prices do meet all customer needs,” Paxton said. “The sale this year is to help make up for lagging sales during the year and will include cookbooks, media including books on CD, and books and magazines on crafts such as woodworking, quilting, knitting and needlework.”

Paxton explained that the Friends enjoy helping local scholars with donations to ‘Dollars for Scholars,’ and aim to provide the funds needed to maintain the library’s defibrillators and supply computer headphones.

“Most of the volunteers are avid readers themselves and love listening in when one of the librarians is taking toddlers through their musical instrument and singing class, which the Friends help make possible,” Paxton said.

Monies raised from these book sales also support the Arlington Library’s “Books for Babies,” “Baby Story Time” and summer reading programs for all ages, as well as its copy machine and $1,000 academic scholarship.
