ARLINGTON — Sara Deeter describes herself as soft-spoken.

To that end, the 16-year-old Arlington High School student remained quiet during her first Arlington School Board meeting as junior class student adviser.

Deeter’s first meeting was Monday, Aug. 9.

The high-schooler joins former junior class adviser and current senior class adviser Claire Logan as the two student representatives on the Board.

“I’ve actually known Claire since she was 3 and I was 2,” Deeter said. “Before she got her position, I didn’t realize that it existed. She seemed to get a lot out of it, so I applied.”

Deeter applied in April for the position, which gives students a chance to learn about how the School Board makes decision that affect the district, as well as advise Board members on student matters.

She interviewed in June, and was selected shortly after.

“It’s good for me career-wise, as I want to be a teacher,” Deeter said. “It’s also good to learn how these decisions are made.”

Superintendent Kris McDuffy swore in Deeter shortly after the Aug. 9 meeting began. Deeter then shook hands with members of the Board before assuming her position.

Deeter will serve two years — her junior and senior year — as a student adviser.

In addition to her new role on the Board, Deeter said she is involved with National Honors Society, knowledge bowl and tennis, and is enrolled in Advanced Placement classes.

She said she wants to be an English teacher with endorsements in history and chemistry.
