OSO — As of Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Technical Water Rescue and Dive Team is recovering a body from the Stillaguamish River between Arlington and Darrington.

Marysville Police took a missing person report on Monday, Jan. 20, at approximately 6:30 p.m. The responding officer learned from family members that their 71-year-old father was supposed to have come to their house for dinner on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 19, and did not show up. They’d last spoken with him that Sunday morning, at which time he advised them that he was heading to the Oso area to check on the fishing.

The man’s daughter-in-law went to his residence during the day on Jan. 19, but his vehicle was not there. The responding officer and the man’s son entered his residence, but did not locate him at that time. The missing man was entered into a national database as missing, and an attempt to locate him was distributed to other local law enforcement agencies.

Just before 9 p.m. on Jan. 20, a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputy located the vehicle of the missing man along Highway 530. Search efforts were hindered due to the terrain in the area and the time of day, and the decision was made to return the following morning to conduct a search. A search of the area by SnoHAWK1, as well as search and rescue crews, was launched on the morning of Jan. 21 at first light, and a body was located around 11 a.m. The Dive Team was sent in for recovery, due to river conditions.

Identification of the victim, as well as the cause and manner of his death, are pending from the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
