ARLINGTON — Eagles fans now have a new, metallic mascot.

On Sept. 9, a 20-foot-long, 300-pound bronze eagle was installed at John C. Larson Stadium — just in time for football season.

The eagle, crafted by Arlington artist Harry Engstrom, was donated to the district by former Arlington Superintendent Linda Byrnes and Arlington Mayor Margaret Larson.

“It really fits with the architecture,” Byrnes said. “It’s a great gift for the kids.”

The eagle was machine cut by Irongate Machine Inc. in Bellingham, and Engstrom transported the piece of metal down to his shop in Arlington to be painted.

Engstrom said that he started working on the piece in May.

Engstrom and his son, Eric, helped transport the eagle to the high school. A crane then lifted the structure to one of the corner sections of the stadium facing away from the field.

It was attached so that one wing spread above the building and the other extended beyond the side.

“It’s also up just in time for our soccer game tomorrow,” Byrnes said.
