ARLINGTON – Two of Housing Hope’s Volunteers of the Year are from Arlington.

They are Donna Leder and the Smokey Point Community Church.

In 2015, 502 Housing Hope volunteers gave 4,502 hours of time, worth an estimated $123,985.

Leder volunteers with HopeWorks, an organization that evolved from Housing Hope’s goal to provide job readiness, counseling, internships and work experience to low-income individuals and people experiencing homelessness.

She recently helped found HopeWorks Ambassadors, a volunteer advisory group. She also helped create a volunteer program for ReNewWorks Home and Décor store in Everett, one of HopeWorks’ social enterprises.

Leder continues to volunteer at the store, and assists with customer service, inventory management and marketing on a weekly basis.

Smokey Point Community Church recently paid for and installed a playground at Housing Hope’s Arlington Triplex property, and spent hours helping with interior and exterior painting projects at Housing Hope’s Maple Leaf Meadows property.

Most recently, the church brought 60 volunteers to the Maple Leaf Meadows property to spread bark and play chips, and stain fences and other outdoor areas.

“We could not do the work we do without volunteers,” said Fred Safstrom, CEO of Housing Hope.

Housing Hope, in 1987, recognizes that safe, decent and affordable housing is only the first step in creating housing stability for struggling families. The agency employs approximately 95 full- and part-time staff, but has more than 500 volunteers of all ages in various capacities, to deliver needed services for families experiencing homelessness to gain self-sufficiency.
