ARLINGTON — Winter weather was forgotten as Kent Prairie Elementary school was recently turned into a beach to raise funds for the school’s PTA.

On Friday, Feb. 5, the Arlington school played host to the PTA’s 10th annual PTA Carnival, a three-hour event during which organizers hold games, activities and provide food to students and parents.

Volunteers raised approximately $5,000 during the carnival.

This year’s theme was “Spring Break: A Trip to the Beach,” and paper sea creatures and other beach-related items were plastered in Kent Prairie’s hallway.

“Each year I’m always amazed at what the decorations committee is able to do with a few volunteers and a lot of creativity,” said Carnival Chair Kimberly Meno.

During the carnival students could purchase tickets for 25 cents. Each game or event cost one ticket. Activities included a bouncy house, a pitching machine and a cake walk. Events were held throughout the school.

Organizers also held a silent auction, which took place in the Kent Prairie library, and prizes were handed out to students based on how many games they played.

Event sponsors included Edward Jones Investments, Dr. Jeff and Judi Cartwright, Steve Cooper, Ferdie and Venus Fernandez, Les Schwab Tire Centers and Walker Insurance Agency.

Jamba Juice also provided beverages, and donated 20 percent of its proceeds to Kent Prairie.

Money raised by the PTA pays for field trips, student enrichment grants, assemblies, the library’s accelerated reading program, playground equipment and other items, Meno said.

“Older students look forward to this night with great expectation and they have great pride in this event,” Meno said.
