LAKEWOOD – The Lakewood High School boys and girls are at the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to their golf teams.
The boys have a lot of experience, the girls not so much.
Twins Brice and Kyle Stanton return to lead the senior-laden boys team, along with junior Wyatt Stephens, Brandon Smith, sophomore Henry Hurd and Chase Dardin. So the varsity six is pretty much set, coach Larry Heller said, adding freshman C.J. McClellan is a future standout.
“I’m impressed with some of the young guys, if they can get passed their nerves,” Haller said.
The coach said the twins are great leaders.
“They’re very competitive and love the game,” he added.
Haller said King’s and Archbishop Murphy are “so loaded every year,” but the Cougars could “slide into the top three if all the guys stay focused.”
As for the girls, coach Chris Walster, who started the program 16 years ago, said he has only two returning players in senior Kendal Hurd and sophomore Brooke Forsell.
“Most have never played golf before,” he said.
As for the league, Walster said King’s, which won the state crown last year, has to be the favorite again.
