Lakewood celebrates homecoming

LAKEWOOD — Sporting a red cape and pink shorts, Breanna Camp looked every bit the part during “Super Hero Thursday.”

The Lakewood High School senior, as well as a number of her classmates, donned their spandex tights and assorted capes Oct. 22 for the fourth of five spirit days leading up to the homecoming dance Saturday, Oct. 24.

Camp, along with senior Cameron Fry and junior Charnie Dondrea, have been part of the driving force behind homecoming week at the high school, which took place Oct. 19-24.

The three students helped brainstorm homecoming’s theme — “A Night Among the Stars” — as well as the five theme days, two assemblies and homecoming dance.

“I don’t think I’ve stopped working on homecoming since the beginning of the school year,” said Camp, who was also elected a first princess in the homecoming court.

Lakewood teacher Chris Walster, whose leadership class puts on homecoming activities, said the students do all of the planning.

“I just try to steer them in the right direction,” Walster said. “We’ve had a pretty good response. Some of the faculty has dressed up as well.”

The school’s theme days all fell in line with the central homecoming theme — Monday was “Oscar Night,” in which students were encouraged to dress up in tuxedos or dresses.

Tuesday was an homage to horror flicks with “Terror Tuesday.”

Wednesday marked “Wacky Wednesday,” which encouraged students to dress up as their favorite comedy actors and actresses.

After “Super Hero Thursday,” students wore their school colors for “Maroon & Gold” day.

In addition to theme days, student organizers held school-wide competitions. Each of the four classes decorated a specific wall in the high school.

The seniors’ hallway was a “Star Wars” theme, while decorations from the another George Lucas trilogy — “Indiana Jones” — were place in the juniors’ hallway.

The sophomores elected to create a “Ghostbusters” hallway and the freshmen opted for “Jaws.”

A tailgate party and float parade were scheduled to take place on Friday Oct. 23, in addition to a school assembly.

During the assembly, classes were slated to compete against one another in a handful of games, such as a spinoff of “The Dating Game” in which blindfolded boys expecting to get smooched from their girl classmates actually got kissed by their mothers.

“They’re in for a surprise,” Fry said Oct. 21. “We’re all pretty excited for the assembly.”
