LAKEWOOD — Amidst the rain and wind, locals wandered around the Lakewood High School track one last time.
That’s because the track and field that’s been there since 1984 is getting revamped.
Track and field coach Jeff Sowards sought an opportunity to host his teams last practice on the old tack and invite the local alums to walk on it.
Neil Brumble and John Nunnally both graduated in 1990 and braved the weather to pay their amends to the track.
“This is normal for us,” Brumble said about the wet conditions.
Brumble lived right across the street where he did track and cross- country for Lakewood since middle school. He first saw it as a cow pasture before becoming the school’s track and football field.
“It’s bittersweet,” Brumble said. “I watched this thing come and go my entire life.”
Now the track is getting a much-needed facelift to host future meets. Brumble is happy about the revamping.
“I’m excited for the new change and the better area for the kids,” Brumble said. “We had to come down here and see it one more time.”
Nunnally also grew up in the area and did his share of track for Lakewood. The memories he cherished the most were the friends he made and the coaching.
“This is where we formed a lot of tight relationships,” Nunnally said. “The big thing for us is it made us into men down here.”
Also paying a “nostalgic” visit at the track was 1984 alum Jodi Jensen, who was among the first class to use the track.
She also has deep family roots in the community, being born and raised in Lakewood, but she is also “getting excited for the new facility,” she said.
