Dickerman and Lake Twenty-two trailheads closed for expansion
Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has announced that the trailheads for Dickerman and Lake Twenty-two are closed for improvements.
The Mt. Dickerman Trailhead is closed through April 2009. The project will increase the parking lot from 20 spaces to 70 and will add parking for the Perry Creek Trail. A connector trail will be built from the Perry Creek Trail to the Dickerman Trailhead, and when it is finished, the Perry Creek Road will be closed. Mt. Dickerman Trailhead is located at milepost 27.3 on the Mountain Loop Highway east of Granite Falls.
The Lake Twenty-two Trailhead parking area will be closed until the end of this year. The parking lot will expand from 30 to 48 spaces, gain new toilets and signs. Some parking will be available across the highway in the nearby Hemple Creek Picnic area. Lake Twenty-two Trailhead is located at milepost 13.2 on the Mountain Loop Highway, east of Granite Falls.

Christmas ornaments wanted
Artists are invited to create Christmas tree ornaments for the Arts Council of Snohomish County’s “gallery tree” for the 23rd annual Providence Foundations Festival of Trees.
The event theme this year is “The Magic Lives On” and the arts council’s tree theme is “Magical Art of The Woodlands.”
The artistic gallery tree has become a very popular part of the event, according to Chris Oldfield, an arts council board member.
The colors are gold, burnt red, bronze, umber orange and greens. The tree will have birds nestled in the branches.
“We envision an eclectic, expressive, unique tree covered with one-of-a-kind decorations suitable for a tree, but also as an addition to someone’s art collection.
They also need larger items for under the tree, a tree skirt, and a unique tree topper.
“Last year our table top tree sold for $3,000, to benefit the Providence Children’s Center,” she said.
This year’s tree will be auctioned off at the Festival of Trees Gala Dinner Dec. 4.
The Arts Council of Snohomish County and the artist who contribute will be recognized in the event program, on a sign at the event at the Everett Events Center, and mentioned during the evening of the auction.
The Festival of Trees runs Dec. 2 – 6 at the Everett Events Center.
All ornaments/art should be delivered to the Arts Council Gallery at 1507 Wall Street, Everett by Nov. 25.

Master Gardener, professional
horticulture training available
Applications for the 2009 Washington State University Master Gardener Program and the professional horticulture training program are now available and must be returned by Oct. 30.
The Master Gardener program trains volunteers in horticulture, gardening and pest management. WSU faculty, staff and local specialists provide university training in horticulture and related topics.
Volunteers learn how to identify and troubleshoot common garden challenges and to offer environmentally responsible solutions. In return for the training, volunteers assist local extension personnel in providing information and education to the community.
Training is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays, Jan. 8 through March 19, 2009 with two Saturday sessions. A $150 fee is charged to cover costs of materials and training.
Home gardeners and horticulture professionals also can now train alongside Master Gardeners without having to provide volunteer payback hours. Instead, they pay up front for the training and receive a Hort Pro Certificate from Washington State University Snohomish County Extension upon completion.
Training days are the same as the Master Gardener program, but the cost is $500. Applications for both must be submitted by Oct. 30.
Registration forms are available on-line at snohomish.wsu.edu/mg, in person at the WSU Snohomish County Extension office in McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett or by mail: Send a self-addressed, stamped, legal-size envelope (include proper postage) to the WSU Snohomish County Extension address above.
