ARLINGTON — In honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Arlington Sno-Isle Library sought to combine competitive fun and food at the empty field adjacent to the facility.
The games coincided with Sno Isle’s theme of “On your Mark…get set…read!” which encouraged kids to keep reading over the summer.
About 20 kids showed up on Olympics day. “I was really happy to see so many kids turn up,” said Lesla Wolf, a children’s librarian at the Arlington facility.
Things started off quickly with a relay of sorts, where contestants put on oversized sports attire while relaying a tennis ball between their knees to exhange with the other side.
After that, three kids volunteered as “catchers.” They had shaving cream put on their heads, while the other kids threw cheeseballs at them to try to get the food items to stick.
The games ended with food, cake and plenty of bubbly wands.
With the outdoor fun and food to be had, Wolf saw it as a pleasant conclusion to Sno-Isle’s reading program.
“I think we ended it on a pretty good note,” she said.
