ARLINGTON — Readers who join the Arlington Library’s summer reading program will get a buck, or more.

“We are putting a new twist on summer reading program this year,” said Kathy Bullene, managing librarian at the Arlington Library.

For signing up and for every book young readers read, they’ll get a Book Buck that can be used to purchase books in the library’s ongoing book sale in the lobby, a project of the Friends of the Arlington Library.

“”Steve [Stav] is a very special donor,” said one of the coordinators of the book sale, Karen Hobson. The book sale is a project of the Friends of the Arlington Library.

“We named him Donor of the Year because of all the stuff he has donated to us,” Hobson said.

“He goes to auctions and buys lots of videos, books and CDs, then he donates the ones he doesn’t want,” Hobson said.

“Our customers love the movies, they sell like hot cakes,” Bullene said.

The Book Bucks are a clever adaptation of a dollar bill with Stav’s baby picture in George’s place.

Stav said he is a strong supporter of the Arlington Library, because public libraries saved his hide as a kid.

“I spent my summers in the library,” Stav said.

“I believe in the projects of the Friends of the Library.”

The ongoing book sale at the entrance to the library raises money for all kinds of projects and activities in the library. They support teen parties and special guest entertainers, Shakespeare in the Park, and much more.

“We tried having a big book sale, but it was way too much work,” Hobson said. “We make about a hundred dollars a week this way and it’s a lot easier.”
