Student designs winning poster

ARLINGTON — A junior at Arlington High School, Yuki Dorff created the winning design that will be featured on this year’s Respect t-shirt and posters. Her design was selected from among more than 200 entries by the district’s board of directors Monday, Nov. 24.

“The poster contest is important because it helps raise awareness of our mission,” said the co-chair of Arlington Public Schools’ Respect program, Sarah Cofer.

“The purpose of Arlington school’s Respect movement is to empower Arlington students to positively impact their schools. Students making a difference is our vision. By educating and training a diverse group of student leaders at each school, our hope is that they will be able to influence the greater population,” Cofer said.

Dorff was surprised in her fourth period class last week, when she was presented with balloons and a gift, as well as a framed copy of her artwork, with witnesses, Superintendent Kristine McDuffy, high school principals Kurt Criscione and Rob Pattermann, Respect program co-chairs Sarah Cofer and Alvin Moore, and AHS Respect team advisors Dena Cave and Jim Smoots.

The decision was made Monday, Nov. 29 during the workshops of the district’s board of directors.

The school board selected 13 finalists, then narrowed down their selections to one winner and one runner-up. The runner-up was Kellie Brem, a senior.

The artwork features the word “Respect” with elements of the concept neatly penciled onto the seven letters.

The design will be featured on next year’s school calender as well as t-shirts, pins, the letterhead and on notecards.

Dorff is the public relations coordinator of the Arlington High School Respect Team.
