ARLINGTON — After much discussion, a photo of Justin Surber’s “God is dead” shirt will appear in the Arlington High School yearbook.

According to media reports, yearbook adviser Anne Hayman said that the photo of the school’s Debate Club, which contained Surber wearing the shirt, will be published in this year’s annual.

Surber, 18, claimed in February that he was a victim of censorship after he wore the shirt in the club’s group photo, which was slated to appear in the yearbook.

The shirt prompted yearbook staff to scheduled a re-take of the group due to the controversial black shirt with white bold letters, reports said.

Surber, along with one of his friends, opted to not be in that second photo.

Surber then went to Arlington High School principal Kurt Criscione, who discussed the issue with district legal counsel, reports said.

Hayman said that she just wanted to have two photos on hand in case the first photo that included Surber’s shirt was deemed inappropriate.

The term “God is dead” is a statement coined by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, and appears in “The Gay Science,” published in 1882.
