MARYSVILLE – An Everett teen drowned Tuesday afternoon in the southern Twin Lakes near Smokey Point.
The medical examiner Wednesday identified the boy as Chance Vanwalkenburgh, 16. His body was found by divers in only about 6 feet of water, Snohomish County Lt. David Bowman said.
Two boys were swimming in the northeast corner of the lake at about 2 p.m. when one of them ran into trouble, saying something like he was caught on weeds, Bowman said.
The friend tried to help, but ended up swimming to shore. He tried to go back to help but couldn’t find the victim. Other friends called 9-1-1. The body was found by divers about an hour later.
“The water looks pristine, but there is a large amount of debris and logs that could encumber a swimmer,” Bowman said. “This lake is very murky.”
Bowman added, “The horrible thing is there are lifejackets right there.” He pointed to a cabinet only a few yards from where the boys went into the water.
He said when he goes into the ocean, for example, even he likes to wear a life jacket, so he can just relax and float.
“I was on the dive team for 6 1/2 years and never rescued one person with a life jacket” on, he said.
The father of the boy, Thomas Vanvalkenburgh, said a fund has been set up to help pay expenses for a proper burial. To donate go to: www.gofundme.com/funeral-expenses-for-chance .
It was the second drowning in the area in two weeks.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recently recovered the body of a 52-year-old Arlington man in Lake Goodwin. The man was reported to have been ejected from a boat . The boat’s operator, a 58-year-old Stanwood man, was believed to be intoxicated and could potentially face charges of homicide by watercraft pending the outcome of the investigation, a sheriff’s news release says.
