Allen earns fourth medalist honor
EVERETT — Winning has become commonplace quickly for frosh Anthony Allen and the Eagles golf team.
Allen took medalist honors, leading the way for Arlington to defeat Marysville-Pilchuck and Everett in a Wesco North match April 15 at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.
“This team has as much potential as any team I’ve had so far,” said eight-year Arlington coach Jack Greaves. “So I’m sort of expecting what we saw here today. It doesn’t always happen, but it has a lot so far.”
The conference win is Arlington’s fifth of the season out of six tournaments. The Eagles dominated the course, totaling 400 strokes, which defeated Marysville-Pilchuck (436) and Everett (443).
Allen led the tournament, shooting a 74 (36-38), which bested the field by at three strokes. It was the fourth medalist honors he’s come away with in six matches.
“He’s just consistent,” Greaves said of Allen. “He doesn’t let anything get to him. We’ve been working on his short game lately, but he just knows what golf is supposed to look like.”
Making most of the shots he needs, Allen separated himself from the field with game management.
“His expectations for every shot are pretty realistic,” Greaves said. “He doesn’t try to hit that perfect shot with every swing, he just knows where he can hit it.”
While Allen provided the groundwork for Arlington’s most recent win, the Eagles got help from sophomore Jack Lindley who fought off a couple of double-bogeys early in his round to shoot a 79 by putting together a 38 on the back nine.
“Jake plays a lot of golf and it’s kind of starting to come together for him,” Greaves said. “He’s becoming more mature and it’s awesome to see him put up a number like that.”
Following Lindley for Arlington was freshman Brandon Heise at 80 (40-40), while sophomore Levi Larson shot an 83 (43-40) and senior Casey Corcoran scored with an 84 (46-38).
Greaves said expectations for this group are rising with each successful result.
“I thought coming in that there could be the potential to finish at No. 1 or No. 2 in the North, so I’m starting to expect this sort of thing,” said Greaves, who likened this year’s group to his 2005 squad that won the North championship.
