ARLINGTON — Lady Eagles coach Nathan Davis knew going into a game with Edmonds-Woodway that there was little room for error.
And the Eagles were able to maintain that pace for more than a quarter before losing 71-53 when the Warriors caught fire Jan. 12 in Northwest Conference girls basketball action.
“We tried to man them up but they just didn’t miss,” said Davis. “They were just too efficient on offense, if you don’t score every time you go down the court, you’re going to fall behind.”
And that’s pretty much what happened in the middle of the second quarter, when Edmonds 12-3 run to take a 33-19 lead. During that stretch, the Warriors barely missed a handful of shots. At the same time, Arlington was kept in check by the strong defense of posts Ashley Albertson and Sydney Donaldson, who were disrupting and blocking shots.
On the other end, the Warriors finished with nine 3-pointers as they kept their spacing with room for cuts and open shots almost all night.
“They were spaced really well — but that also works because everybody on that team can shoot,” said Davis.
Arlington trailed 36-24 at halftime, but Edmonds opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 45-26 lead and didn’t look back.
What kept the Eagles in the game early on was offensive rebounding. Thanks to posts Lindsay Brown and Kaiti Ferro, the Eagles were able to turn mistakes into second chance points to keep up with the Warriors.
“That was our plan going into the game — to crash the boards and outbound them,” said Davis. “That worked for a while but they started to get too many rebounds.”
Leading the Eagles was junior Lauren Grogan, who had 12 points while sophomore Krista Showalter added eight.
The loss knocks Arlington down to 3-6 in conference and 7-6 overall.
The Eagles mounted a small offensive in the fourth quarter behind significant contributions from reserves like sophomore Winter Brown.
“She played some great minutes for us, handling their pressure while bringing the ball up and getting things moving,” said Davis.
Arlington travels to Cascade for a Wesco North matchup.
