ARLINGTON — The Eagles track and field teams took first place over Mount Vernon during an Arlington meet on Thursday, March 28.

Eagle athletes took first place in 31 of the 36 events, and took other top spots to put the team more than 100 points ahead of the Bulldogs.

“I know for a fact that Emma Janousek had a huge day for us,” said AHS coach Mike Shierk. “She got a personal record in the girls 1,600-meters with a 5:28, which puts her at the top of the Wesco league. Then she went on to run a 2.30 in the 800-meters. Those are very, very good times for this time of year.”

Janousek is 12th overall in the Kingco/Wesco bidistrict, and has the rare opportunity to be the first AHS athlete to go to state three times as a freshman. Janousek competed in the state cross country meet and helped the Eagles take second place in the girls state basketball tournament.

“As far as we know, there are no other athletes in school history who have gone to state in all three sports as freshmen,” said Shierk.

The boys team had a successful meet as well.

“Jameson Wren had a great race in the 1,000-meters, with a 4.46,” said Shierk. “Kaleb Bryson finished the boys 800-meters with a 2.06.”

“The interesting thing about that meet was that, in a lot of these races that kids were in, we had a lot of competition with ourselves — competition that we didn’t seem to have from Mount Vernon. When you are racing against another team there is all that adrenaline that keeps you up. The kids had that challenge to go out and compete against each other and I’m proud of their effort.”

Field events were also a success for the Eagles.

“Lyndsay Leatherman is our top thrower, and she won the javelin, shot put and discus. She did a great job,” said Shierk. “Marissa Swegle PR’d in discus as well and had a great day. Jon Rabourn PR’d in the javelin and did a good job in the boys four-by-four.”

The Eagles will compete at a meet hosted by Monroe on Thursday, April 11.
